Introduction to Graphite Electrodes

Mar. 21, 2023

Graphite electrode is a kind of high temperature resistant graphite conductive material, which is released in the form of electric arc in the electric arc furnace, and the electric energy heats and melts the furnace charge. It is one of the substitutes for copper electrodes. Graphite electrodes mainly include natural graphite electrodes and artificial graphite electrodes. Among them, artificial graphite electrodes are widely used, which are processed by various processes such as raw material calcination and crushing, with petroleum coke and pitch coke as aggregate and coal tar pitch as binder.

Introduction to Graphite Electrodes

Properties of graphite electrodes: 1. Strong electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity 2. High thermal shock resistance and chemical stability 3. Lubricity and wear resistance 4. Easier processing.

Introduction to Graphite Electrodes

As a chemical material, graphite electrode has good performance, so it is widely used. 1. Used in electric arc steelmaking furnace: Electric furnace steelmaking is a major user of graphite electrodes. The output of electric furnace steel in my country accounts for about 18% of crude steel output. Graphite electrodes for steelmaking account for 70%-80% of the total amount of graphite electrodes. Electric furnace steelmaking is to use graphite electrodes to introduce current into the furnace, and use the high-temperature heat source generated by the arc between the electrode end and the charge to smelt. 2. Used in submerged thermal electric furnace: submerged thermal electric furnace is mainly used to produce industrial silicon and yellow phosphorus, etc. It is characterized in that the lower part of the conductive electrode is buried in the charge, and an arc is formed at the bottom of the charge layer and the heat energy emitted by the resistance of the charge itself is used. to heat the furnace. Among them, the submerged arc furnace that requires a higher current density needs to use graphite electrodes. 3. Used in resistance furnace: graphitization furnace for producing graphite products. Furnaces for melting glass and electric furnaces for producing silicon carbide are all resistance furnaces. The material in the furnace is both a heating resistor and a heated object. Usually, the conductive graphite electrode is embedded in the burner wall at the end of the resistance furnace, and the graphite electrode used here is discontinuously consumed. 4. Used to prepare special-shaped graphite products: the blank of graphite electrode is also used to process various special-shaped graphite products such as crucibles, molds and heating elements.
